Private and purpose built: Albany Stadium pool's new accessible changing room

Using public leisure facilities can be a fraught experience when you have a mobility requirement, with accessible amenities notably absent from many local pools and fitness centres. Auckland Council’s Albany Stadium Pool has changed this with the opening of its new accessible changing room, allowing pool users with reduced mobility to enjoy a private, comfortable and purpose-built space.

The project began as a result of feedback provided by disabled visitors not long after Albany Stadium Pool first opened in 2017. Auckland Council’s Aquatics Team collaborated with Lifemark throughout the build, with the final design successfully meeting Lifemark standards and being endorsed by CCS Disability Action.

The spacious facility can fit both a wheelchair and a support person with ease. It features a ceiling-mounted hoist, adjustable toilet and shower seats, a flat change bed, slip-resistant floors and a basin and mirror set at seated height. All specialised equipment is height adjustable and operable by remote control, making it easier for people to use the facilities both independently and with support if required.

One of Lifemark’s recommendations for the design was to install automatic doors to the bathroom as well as the foyer area outside. Auckland Council engaged GDR Architectural to deliver this part of the project.

“We came up with a solution utilising an access toilet package of switches that are highly visible and also incorporate braille,” said GDR Architectural’s Matt Rutter. “This operates and locks the automatic sliding door when in use and clearly shows users from outside whether it is vacant or occupied.”

They also supplied two automatic swing door operators for access to the foyer. Both sets of automatic doors are opened with swipe cards that can be obtained from the front desk. The result is that the facilities are secure, private and easy to access for people with a variety of impairments and mobility needs.

Auckland Council’s General Manager of Active Communities, Dave Stewart, is thrilled with the outcome of the project.

“Our Aquatics Facilities team has worked tirelessly for this project to overcome many obstacles, with a focus on ensuring equitable access for everyone – no matter what their requirements may be,” he said.

“I am proud of this commitment, and we can now celebrate having a public swimming pool that caters for everyone.”

Since its opening in October, the changing room has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from visitors who have used the facility as well as their support people. Lifemark is pleased to have played a role in making the pool inclusive to the whole community, no matter their age or stage of life.
